Abstract
The present work deals with the determination of the optimal operating conditions of a complex transformation in a batch or semi-batch reactor when detailed knowledge (reaction mechanisms, kinetics …) is not available, as in fine chemistry. The retained strategy consists in the development of an approximate stoichiometric and kinetic model. An experimental planning has been utilised as data base for the model development. This model is then used in an optimization procedure to compute the optimal process conditions: temperature and feed rate trajectories, amount of added reactant, total batch time. The validity of the methodology developed is illustrated by the determination of the optimal operating conditions of the lactic acid production by the alkaline degradation of fructose. The experimental application of the optimal procedure confirmed the improvements in yield and selectivity predicted by the tendency model.
