Abstract

Liquid and plastic limits, abbreviated respectively as LL and PL, are obtained through the Casagrande cup method or the fall-cone tests. In the past several correlations between the two methods have been provided, and a general trend is observed. This paper analyzes over 100 global researches and novel experimental data considering different soils. In particular the relation LL Casagrande vs LLC fall-cone and the relation plastic limit (PL) Casagrande vs PLC fall-cone was discussed. Further, in order to clarify more specifically the difference in liquid limit values in both testing methods, the liquid limit difference, considered as the different between the LL for Casagrande cup and the LL for fall-cone tests is plotted against the ratio PL/LL for the Casagrande cup considering two factors related to the intercept with the A- and U- lines. The coefficients of variation (COV) for both liquid and plastic limits based on the standard Casagrande method and the fall cone method were also assessed.
