Abstract

We end this special issue of Clinics in Dermatology with a look into the future, trying to foresee what the 21st century will hold for us in the field of cosmetics and skin care products. Although “It’s tough to make predictions, especially about the future,” (Yogi Berra of baseball fame) and although physicians and scientists find it easier, more comfortable, and safer to use familiar medical equipment than peer into a crystal ball, some contributors to this issue accepted the challenge. They were asked to share their personal views on the basis of “gut instinct,” without being inhibited by having to justify or base their opinions on data or references. These contributors were given a completely free hand with respect to the number of questions they were willing to answer and the length and complexity of their replies. I had asked the directors of the research and development divisions of 12 leading cosmetic companies to share with us their thoughts concerning future perspectives of cosmetics, but only Paolo Giacomoni of Clinique responded, and I am delighted to present his insightful comments.
