Abstract

A Geographic Information System (GIS) was used together with simple ecosystem models to assist in desertification assessment and mapping. Models were developed to evaluate water erosion, wind erosion, vegetation degradation, and range utilization as desertification indicators. Iterative methods facilitated refinement and verification of models in training areas. Desertification hazard was calculated as the integration of these modeled indicators and a human settlement indicator.
