Abstract

A very large bacillary form of microorganism with a unique structural configuration was observed as an incidental finding in the course of an oral exfoliative cytology examination of three patients. The organisms occur in trichomes (filaments) composed of cells aligned face to face. Each filament is about 3 microns wide and may be of considerable length (15 to 50 microns). On a morphologic basis, the organism was considered to belong to the genus Simonsiella, a harmless saprophyte that occurs in the oral cavity in man and domestic animals.
