Abstract

Synopsis Seismic, gravity and magnetic data indicate a basin of Old Red Sandstone, probably fault bounded and about 1 km deep, between the south coast of Kintyre and Sanda Isle, where the Dalradian basement has been uplifted. A gravity high near Southend is interpreted as due to concealed faulting in the southern limb of the Campbeltown syncline, together with a hidden basic intrusion. Adjacent to this high there is a chain of minor intrusives with weak magnetic anomalies. The deeper faulting in the Dalradian, the shallower faults in the Old Red Sandstone, the hidden basic mass and the outcropping intrusions may all be tectonically related. The structures may be part of the Highland Boundary Fault zone.
