Abstract

Geologic heterogeneity and complexity are not typically captured or represented during the site selection process for identifying suitable formations and regions for CO2 storage and/or CO2-EOR. This study begins with an evaluation of key geologic variables for well documented geologic formations to identify which characteristics best correlate with a successful use of the reservoir (production, EOR, storage). Then, a new ranking system was designed around these variables to capture the heterogeneity. Finally, the methodology was applied to different case studies to test the applicability of the system. The results identified top sites in both the Appalachian and Michigan Basins.
