Abstract

Way back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Paul Bettis and I were among the many engaged in the sometimes joyful, sometimes excruciating process of making original Canadian Theatre in Toronto. (Later, Paul would describe that era — dismissively? or with respect? — as “spadework.”) From 1974, when he first sounded me about working together, Paul and I supported, questioned and challenged each other, shared ideas and opinions, sometimes celebrated and, very often, commiserated over some alcoholic beverage.
