Abstract

Today's marketplace offers a large variety of expert system development tools(ESDTs). Each tool has its specific features and capacities, which have great impact on the efficiency of system development. The selection of a right tool can be a key factor leading to the eventual success of an expert system. The selection of proper ESDT to suit the needs of an organization requues efficient application of multi-criteria decision n.ethodology. This paper identifies a set of criteria and presents a generic solution framework, along with a mixed model, that can be effectively used to evaluate these tools to satisfy an organization's requirements. In order to. demonstrate the usefulness of this approach, a detailed example and a specific multi-criteria decision making approach have been employed to illustrate the ESDT selection problem, the criteria, the model and the solution procedure.
