Abstract

A new derivation is given for the expansion of the Gibbs potential and thermal Green's function in terms of the true occupation numbers. In this derivation, the so-called anomalous diagrams are eliminated directly with the aid of a generating function. This procedure casts into evidence the reason for the formal resemblance of the results with the zero-temperature expansions. The analogy between the present method and the proof of the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem is stressed.
