Abstract
A generalized principle of invariance is derived for a plane-parallel atmosphere. On the basis of this principle a method for determining the radiation field in a multilayer atmosphere is proposed. This method, the first part of which is the well-known adding method, permits the application to problems involving optically finite as well as semi-infinite atmospheres. The reflecting boundaries may be incorporated, though in that case it is not possible to use the adding method.
