Abstract

In 1965 a criterion was described for choosing from among a large number of evolutionary hypotheses a group of those considered to be most likely (Camin & Sokal, 1965). A method for finding all the evolutionary hypotheses which satisfied this criterion was not known at that time and this has continued to be a problem. Here a solution to this problem is presented. The theory of partial orders is used to analyze a slightly more general problem than was originally posed in 1965.
