Abstract

China is beginning to take part in the high-tech revolution by actively developing its computer technology. The presence of computers in Chinese society has progressed from its exhibit status of a few years ago to its present widespread use in all areas of society. Computers have been incorporated extensively into the Chinese Educational System. Almost all research and development work in the area of CALI is done on micro- and minicomputers because they are more feasible financially. CALI research in China is still in the experimental stage with much of the research being done by teams of computer scientists and professional educators. There is a strong need for software designed by Chinese educators. This software should have an emphasis on the communicative aspects rather than on the structural grammar forms of the language being taught.
