Abstract

In this paper, we provide a general approach to control antenna beam steering loaded with active frequency selective surfaces. This method can obtain the phase and amplitude distribution of conformal active frequency selective surface (AFSS) with different shapes through the principle of phase compensation and the definition equations of conformal AFSS. Based on this method and an AFSS element with adjustable transmission phase, two BS antennas with different conformal shapes AFSS are designed and fabricated to prove the practicability and correctness of the proposed method. They have significant advantages in gain enhancement, beam switching, reasonable distribution of signals and low cost. The measurement results are in good agreement with the simulation ones. This method provides a theoretical guidance for the design of low-cost beam steering antenna with various conformal AFSS.
