Abstract

A gas jet transport system has been developed for the recoil products of fission induced by 14.0-MeV neutrons. Fission products having half-lives of the order of seconds have been transported a distance of 30 m from the point of production. An overall collection efficiency of about 70% was achieved using ethylene as the carrier gas or in mixtures with either He or N 2. Gamma and X-ray spectra of the radiations emitted by the fission products, resulting from the reaction of 14.0-MeV neutrons with a thin natural uranium foil were obtained. Calculations on the nature of the flow of the gas in the capillary are included.
