Abstract

Atoms, bonds, clusters: The reaction of a metastable GaBr solution with trisyllithium (LiC(SiMe3)3) led to a novel cluster unit: two tetrahedral Ga4R3 units are linked through a Ga−Ga bond to give the Ga8R6 cluster (R=C(SiMe3)3; see picture; Ga: dark blue, C: light blue, SiMe3: not shown), which contains the prototype of a localized metal–metal bond.
