Abstract

Quality Function Deployment (QFD) has been widely used in new product development. The foundation of QFD holds that the product should be designed to reflect the customer's needs and desires, which are usually expressed in natural language. Linguistic variables contain ambiguity and multiplicity of meanings. However, the lack of a better approach for interpreting the semantics of these requirements and relationships of requirements makes it difficult to analyze and prioritize the requirements. Fuzzy sets provide a useful tool for dealing with ambiguity in a system; hence, they have been widely applied in evaluation problems. Thus, a method for QFD implementation using fuzzy logic is proposed. This method concentrates on the application of linguistic approximate reasoning and fuzzy arithmetic to address the ambiguities in QFD development. Furthermore, an evalution of a new flexible manufacturing system development is cited to demonstrate the efficiency of this method. The results indicate that the approach can provide the analyst more convincing results in analyzing and prioritizing customer/design requirements.
