Abstract

ABSTRACT While Darcy's equation is applied for laminar seepage flow problems, quadratic form of Forchheimer's equation is widely used in non-linear flow conditions. Many equations relating the coefficients of Forchheimer equation with characteristics of porous and fluid media have been proposed. This paper presents results of experiments carried out in a parallel flow permeameter with 2.7, 3.7, 5.3 and 8.0 mm size porous media. Applicability of Forchheimer's equation for a wide range of velocity of flow is studied and the drawbacks have been brought out. Reliability of application of earlier equations relating Darcy parameter and non-Darcy parameter of Forchheimer's equation with size of the media without specifying the limitations applicability is investigated and found that these equations have limited applicability.
