Abstract
As a fundamental study on application of a damping alloy to gears, the surface durability of cold pressed damping alloy roller was compared with that of thermally refined chromium-molybdenum steel roller. The fatigue test was conducted under a sliding-rolling contact condition using a two cylinder testing machine. The damping alloy rollers were finished by turning, cylindrical grinding and shot-peening, and the steel rollers were finished by turning and cylindrical grinding. The failure mode of all test rollers was pitting. The surface durability of the damping alloy roller was superior to that of the steel roller. The surface durability of the shot-peened damping alloy roller was almost the same as that of the ground damping alloy roller. The surface roughness of the damping alloy roller did not affect the surface durability. It is useful to apply the cold-pressed damping alloy to gears.
