Abstract

A self-consistent field equation obtained by the method of functional integration is applied to investigate the structure of the lattice near the surface of a simple metal. Formulas are obtained for the displacements of ions relative to the nodes of an ideal lattice near the surface of the metal. Formulas are presented for the surface potential and the work of exit for one-dimensional and three-dimensional models.
