Abstract

We describe a simple but very accurate method of navigating AVHRR images. We do not use ground control points, and our orbital calculations are performed by the SGP4 system, which reports satellite positions and heights. We also show how to modify our procedure for the APT system. Our navigation is near-real-time: within thirty minutes of first acquisition of the satellite signal we produce a geo-located HRPT image in an export format of the user's choice. This is the start of a programme of work aiming at the automatic processing of large area scenes.
