Abstract
A free vortex model for the straight bladed vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) was constructed and tested on several existing turbines. Good agreement between experimental and calculated power coefficients was obtained. In contrast to the classical approach, using the Biot-Savart law, the wake-induced velocity field was calculated with a multigrid technique solving the Poisson equation in a rectangular grid. Furthermore, flow curvature effects were investigated. It was found that for the turbines under consideration, the flow curvature effects are negligible. Unsteady aerodynamic effects were included by the use of a modified Boeing-Vertol dynamic stall model. The obtained mathematical model mainly can be used for two purposes: (1) parametric optimization of the VAWT; and (2) optimization of pitch controlled turbines.
