Abstract
This chapter gives a high-level view on a framework for application integration on the user interface level. This chapter will be the basis for various refinements and detailed explanations in the subsequent chapters. Section 5.1 discusses the goals of the approach and defines some axiomatic assumptions. From those goals and assumptions, a set of design decisions are derived, which are sketched in Sect. 5.2. Section 5.3 shows the different types of ontologies used and how they are employed in the framework, and Sect. 5.4 discusses the technical architecture of the framework. In Sect. 5.5, we will introduce the SoKNOS system, an application from the emergency management domain, which has been implemented using the framework discussed in this chapter, and which serves as a running case study throughout this book.
