Abstract

Advancement in Information Technology has led to changes in teaching and learning processes of many educational institutions across the globe, which provides reliable, convenient and easily accessible environment that is conducive for learning. This study carried out an assessment of Kampala International University E-Learning System to study the flaws associated with its existing utilization analysis process/methods of the system as well to determine the requirement to be considered for the development of a framework for utilization analysis process. The utilization analysis of E-Learning Systems is associated with a lot of potentials: monitoring of users activities on the learning management system for the purpose of continue improvement of the E-learning System in order to enhance users experience on the platform. It can also provide up to date information which can be useful to the university management to make an effective and efficient decision which can transform teaching and learning processes positively in the University. In this study, the researchers used qualitative and quantitative research design to study the flaws in the existing E-learning System utilization analysis in Kampala International University and to determine the requirement for the development of utilization analysis framework respectively. These were guided by well structured interview guard and questionnaire. The findings revealed that, the flaws that affects effective e-learning system utilization analysis in the University includes: Inability to download log files to Spreadsheet, Microsoft Word or other formats in order to analyze them and study patterns in user behaviours; manipulation of data for thorough analysis is not supported by the system; generation of reports at real time is not supported; log file data are huge and difficult to make sense out of it; log files are not visual and there are no standard guide on utilization analysis process. We therefore developed e-learning utilization analysis framework based on the findings of this study. All the parameters considered in the newly developed framework are very significant and could be useful for future design of e learning systems. This framework can provide quick and reliable insights for the University decision makers. The researchers recommends that the University Management should adopt this framework as it can inform strategies as well as solutions that can address the identified flaws and provide detail utilization analysis reports that can be useful for decision making and future planning.
