Abstract

In this paper, we present the development and application of a modular Internet-of-Things (IoT)-based frame-work for an intelligent building energy management system (iBEMS). The proposed framework is open-source and leverages the features of decentralized multi-agent systems. The principal component of the framework is the BEMS core that implements building automation features, such as an optimal scheduler, displaying weather information, detecting new IoT devices, moni-toring energy consumption, and remotely controlling operation of IoT devices. We developed and configured two IoT devices (WeMo switch and embedded mobile robot) that are supported with the proposed iBEMS platform. A prototype of the proposed iBEMS framework is tested in a laboratory environment. A working demonstration of the proposed iBEMS frameworks is presented in a set of experimental results.
