Abstract

This study used a participatory action research (PAR) approach to unite key partners from the University of Guelph community in order to examine issues around accessibility and inclusion of students with disabilities in campus life. The goal was to develop a planning framework to assist universities in creating accessible and inclusive campus communities that supports not only students with disabilities, but all individuals who study, live, work or visit the campus. Interviews were conducted with 23 University of Guelph stakeholders, including students with and without disabilities, staff and faculty members, and senior administrators. What emerged was a framework for Creating a Campus Culture of Inclusion. The framework centres around six guiding principles and three fundamental characteristics that a campus culture of inclusion must possess. Process pieces are included in the framework which help fuel and sustain the culture over time.
