Ebbets, D. Abstract The modern technique of Fourier transform analysis of stellar absorption-line profiles has been applied to the study of weak lines broadened asymmetrically by an expanding or contracting photosphere. From a simple geometrical model of the motions, an appropriate broadening function is derived. The complex Fourier transform is shown to contain a significant imaginary part, which contains signatures easily related to the velocity. The technique is demonstrated by broadening a He I line from an O-type supergiant model atmosphere with several values of the expansion velocity. The effects on both the profile and its transform are clearly demonstrated.
