Abstract

A partial skull of a fish belonging to the saurichthyid genus Acidorhynchus is reported from lower Toarcian black shales of the Fernie Group in western Alberta, Canada. This is the first North American record of the genus, which is otherwise known only from the Lower Jurassic of Europe. The synonymy and diagnostic features of the genus Acidorhynchus and its two included species are reviewed, and the new fossil is found to be most closely related to, and possibly conspecific with, the species A. acutus.
