Abstract

A new normative procedure for pelitic rocks, based on the proportions of major components (SiO2, A12O3, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, P2O5, CO2, and SO3/S), and a FORTRAN program for its calculation are presented. The proposed procedure includes two models of norm calculation: smectite absent (A) and smectite present (B). In both models, the content of K20 can be used to determine orthoclase (A,-B,) or illite plus orthoclase (A2-B2). The distributions of MgO and Al2O3 in different minerals, especially clay minerals, have been considered carefully, and normative calculations are adjusted to give the most likely. Comparisons between normative and model composition of several pelitic rocks have shown a fairly good degree of correlation.
