Abstract

To test the feasibility of the Cambridge Conference on School Mathematics recommendation that proof be taught in the elementary school, a unit on mathematical proof was developed using an iterative procedure. The basic objective of the unit was to teach the students to prove and understand a sequence of 6 theorems in number theory. After 2 formative pilot studies were conducted, a Nonequivalent Control Group Design was used to test the revised unit with 10 capable sixth-grade students. The students displayed an understanding of the theorems and were able to learn the proofs.
