Abstract

The mathematical relationship dbh–dith was formulated, according to the definition of Girard form class. By incorporating this formula, the USDA Forest Service hardwood tree grades for factory lumber, and a previously devised general tree-grading algorithm, a form-class tree-grading algorithm was developed. This algorithm, designed primarily for tree grading in field conditions, facilitates the grading of hardwood trees with 12-, 14-, or 16-ft sections located at various positions in the butt log, and serves as a basis for computer programming.
