Abstract

By the start of the construction of the Heidrun platform in the spring of 1993 two important milestones had been passed: (1) construction of the first concrete floater; (2) application of LWA concrete as a structural material for an offshore platform. Concrete has been found to be a favourable construction material for hulls for floating oil production platforms. Lightweight aggregate concrete has been developed and found to be well suited for this purpose. The hydrodynamic properties of the platform can be optimized by proper weight distribution achieved by a feasible combination of normal density and lightweight concrete of different qualities and unit weights.
