Abstract

An embedded ionospheric sounding facility [1] is used in conjunction with the HF propagation prediction program ICEPAC to identify the modal structure present on ionograms generated from oblique incidence ionospheric soundings. The ionospheric sounding and modal analysis system exists as a normal function of an adaptive HF radio terminal. In particular, this paper describes the segmented swept FM (SSFM) sounder, which operates at Beyond-Line-Of-Sight (BLOS) ranges, and the methodology of labelling the propagating ionospheric modes utilising the ICEPAC propagation prediction program.
