Abstract

Now that the strategic environment has changed since the end of the Cold War, it is almost impossible to talk of the navy, or any other service, in isolation. As was seen in the Gulf, joint operations seem to be the most effective way forward in dealing with unpredictable crises in future. A crucial pan of any such joint force is a balanced, fleet and a continued understanding of the need for strong sea power. Here, the Commander‐in‐Chief Fleet discusses the roles and requirements of a ‘fleet for the 90s’, concluding that decisive maritime capability is as important today as ever.
