Abstract

A variable speed wind turbine (VSWT) conversion system with the appropriate control system is proposed. The system has been designed for connection to small power grids since voltage support and good electric power quality at its connection point were from the primary specifications. Below rated wind speed maximum capture of the wind power is achieved. The system uses a fixed pitch WT instead of the controlled pitch type for increased reliability, reduced maintenance and low cost but also because part of the controlled pitch job is accomplished by the proposed system. Above maximum angular speed the controller drives the system to constant speed or maximum power operation mode. The system operation has been tested by simulating its operation in a test system using a developed simulation computer program.
