Abstract

A system-wide program for reducing catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) has been in place for approximately four years. This program includes a nurse-driven protocol for catheter removal, catheter maintenance bundle, use of silver-coated catheters, ongoing education of hospital staff, and various alerts/prompts regarding catheter presence built into an existing electronic medical record system. However, after initial implementation, there has not been a sustained decrease in CAUTI.
