Abstract

AbstractAn alternating method, in conjunction with the finite element method and an analytical solution for an elliptical flaw in an infinite solid, is used to determine the mixed mode stress intensity factors for surface flaws. This finite element alternating method leads to an inexpensive procedure for routine evaluation of accurate stress intensity factors in complex structural components containing surface flaws and subject to mixed‐mode loading. A variety of numerical examples is presented.
