Abstract
AbstractA mixed finite‐element formulation is applied to solve the quasi‐geostrophic equations in a two‐layer ocean domain enclosed by solid boundaries. A combination of leap‐frog and θ‐schemes is used to integrate the equations in time. Wood's formula of the wall vorticity is derived in our formulation for the case of square elements adjacent to the boundaries. Long‐term computations with and without lumping have been carried out.
