Abstract
AbstractA finite element Galerkin formulation admitting non‐homogenous boundary conditions and discontinuous approximants is derived from a variational principle. The procedure results in matrix equations explicitly allowing for jump discontinuties across interelement boundaries. As an illustration, a specialization of the procedure similar to a reduced integration technique is used to solve several problems in elastostatics. The improvement in accuracy in comparison with conventional methods is remarkable.
