Abstract

The level and composition of labour costs, and in particular the steady rise in social security contributions, have been the subjects of intense debate in Germany for some time. With 4.5 million out of work, and with further increases in contributions likely as a result of demographic factors, people are seeking ways to ensure that labour does not become too expensive, and thus to create new jobs. In this respect Edling’s and Friot’s presentations are very stimulating.
