Abstract

This study is to investigate the reaction time to a modified brake lamp for motorcycles in actual traffic. The new design involves flashing a motorcycle’s turn signals when a brake is applied, while each turn signal retains its original function. The objective is to validate this design in actual urban and suburban traffic, as well as at different levels of illumination, namely, noontime on a clear day, late afternoon on a cloudy day, and nighttime on a clear day. Overall, the reaction time to the modified brake lamp is 80 ms shorter than that for conventional ones, and the analysis suggests that the modified brake lamp outperforms the conventional brake lamp when sunlight is bright as well as during nighttime ( p<0.001). During nighttime, the average reaction time for the modified brake lamp was generally shorter than that for the conventional brake lamp. In addition, the modified brake lamp required a shorter reaction time than the conventional brake lamp in the urban traffic ( α=0.05). It was particularly useful in the urban traffic during night ( p<0.01). Relevance to industry The results of this study benefit the tail lamp assembly design for motorcycles. The findings suggest that the modified brake lamps may be a promising device to improve the visibility of the motorcycle when on the road, and to provide easier identification for following motorists.
