Abstract

ABSTRACTPaula Modersohn-Becker (1876–1907) painted her body and those of mothers and babies in the nude, defying centuries of idealized female nudes, painted through the male gaze. She was the first woman artist to address the oneness of the procreative and erotic body, the maternal erotic, appreciating its inherent creativity and dangers. Psychoanalytic theories of female sexuality and the philosophical notion of epistemic injustice illuminate the invalidating power of culture and misogyny.
