Abstract

This article analyses the only re-recordings in the album Estudando o samba (1976): “A felicidade” and “Vai (menina amanha de manha)”. The latter presents a certain notion of happiness used in a few occasions throughout Tom Ze’s work, which will be compared with the notion of happiness found in Jobim and Vinicius’ song, taken as a symbol of the “promise de bonheur” formalized in bossa nova. Both Tom Ze’s recordings will be considered as citations, that is, reframing of the previous versions, which reflect and comment on those. The referred notions of happiness will be associated to the process of capitalist modernization in Brazil, from which their meanings will be extracted.
