Abstract

The main objective of the present study is to provide methodological support for research on the history of professions in which archived sources of disciplinary cases can be used. In order to avoid some methodological pitfalls, an attempt is made to develop a kind of specific paradigm by citing a number of examples from previous research, which may either have a positive or a negative content. In addition to this, the paper deals in detail with the possibilities of demarcating the fields of the history of public administration and the history of bureaucracy from a research perspective, illustrated with examples from Hungarian and foreign literature. The last major section summarises the main directions of research on archival disciplinary files and their significance in the context of a particular scientific research.
