Abstract

2007 saw the three-hundredth anniversary of the Act of Union. But the event was marked by little celebration across the United Kingdom. This lack of observation in part reflects the degree of uncertainty surrounding the status of the UK. In Scotland in particular, the entry into government of the Scottish National Party has served to call into question arrangements for an asymmetrically devolved UK, and even cast doubt upon the UK's long term future. The media and political attention afforded in England to such issues as the Barnett Formula and the so-called 'West Lothian Question' has served to reinforce this perception.
