Abstract
In Canada, the federal and provincial governments have distinct yet interdependent responsibilities related to inland waters. Over the past decade, the senior levels of government have entered into a number of basin planning and other water management arrangements in areas of joint or shared responsibility. Pre-planning and planning experiences are reviewed for several river basins, particularly in relation to evaluation methodology, data collection and research and public consultation. Based on the past decade of experience, factors and trends which might be expected to influence cooperative water management programs in the 1980’s are identified.
