Abstract
Abstract A system is described which allows both nominally square wave modulation of the beam of a 3 MeV Van de Graaff, and counting down to lower frequencies of the 1 MHz klystron bunched beam pulses already available on this machine. The square pulses have rise and fall times of ∽ 17 ns and a minimum width of ∽ 50 ns. With the present system the pulse width can be increased by steps of nominally 100 ns to dc. The frequency range is 1 MHz to dc. The pulses are triggered externally to the machine and the jitter of the leading and trailing edges of the beam with respect to these command pulses is 3 to 4 ns and 1.5 to 2 ns respectively.
