Abstract

A modulated duoPIGatron plasma source, operating with a co-axial cathode, has been developed for the diagnostic neutral beam injector of the Tokamak de Varennes. The source plasma modulation is obtained by an arc-current-modulating circuit equipped with a fast feedback control loop. The modulation frequency is limited only by the plasma impedance, which results in an arc current rise-time of about . The source has been operated with H, He and Ar gases. The source parameters have been optimized for minimum density fluctuation and a flat density profile over the extraction area. A diamagnetic loop has been used as an external monitor of the electron density fluctuation level. In the preliminary experiments using a three-grid extraction system and seven extraction holes of 0.5 cm diameter, up to 600 mA of H beam current at 35 kV was extracted.
