Abstract

Detenrdning the dosimetric characteristics of novel sealed brachytherapy sources has developed into a well defined practice standard (1–2). Experimentally validated Monte Carlo photon transport (MCPT) simulations or measured data are used to produce treatment planning data for commerically available source designs. These data are then applied in brachytherapy treatment planning by interpolation or point source modeling of the characterized source. As most all brachytherapy sources are constructed of rigid materials and the planning data is normalized to a quantity of doismetric output, e.g. air kerma strength (3), this program produces fairly accurate clinical dosimetry (inter-source attenuation and tissue heterogeneities are often ignored).
