Abstract

Introduction: Regular physical activity supports children’s physical and psychological health and wellbeing, and provides opportunities to build social and emotional skills such as resilience, confidence and self-efficacy. Nonetheless, most Australian children do not meet national physical activity guidelines. Further, a considerable proportion of children who were once sufficiently active are no longer. Research has demonstrated that mass participation sporting events can serve as important social and environmental correlates of physical activity.
